1. Largemouth Bass: Bass are transitioning into pre-spawn and early spawn behavior, staging in 6-12 feet of water near flooded brush and buckbrush, especially in creek backs and coves. Use Carolina-rigged lizards or light Texas-rigged plastic worms in natural colors like pumpkinseed, red, or blue to avoid overfished colors. Slow presentations near willow bushes and downed wood will trigger bites.
2. Crappie: Crappie are holding tight to brushpiles in 8-12 feet of water, actively feeding on minnows. Target submerged brush and bridge pilings with live minnows or small jigs fished slowly.
3. Striped Bass: Stripers are beginning their spring run up the Dan and Staunton Rivers. Look for them near the river mouths and main lake channels, trolling Redfins or bucktails 10-15 feet deep.
4. Catfish: Catfish are active in shallow flats and creek mouths. Cut bait, chicken liver, or shad chunks fished near structure or deep holes will produce consistent bites.
With warming temperatures and stable water levels, fishing is improving as many species move toward spawning areas. Early mornings and late evenings offer the best topwater bass action, while mid-day calls for slower, finesse presentations in deeper water or around brush. Keep an eye on afternoon weather changes—showers and thunderstorms can temporarily slow fishing but often improve conditions afterward. Get out and enjoy the diverse fishing opportunities Kerr Lake has to offer this week!
